Enjoying Ubuntu On XPS15

A Collection of guides tips & tricks to get Ubuntu to rock on L501x (Dell XPS-15)

Dell Warranty and OS Installations

I read around the ubuntu-forums about confusions over warranty offered by Dell and its terms regarding OS installations so I decided to call up the tech support team. From the response I got from their side it was very clear that installing any kind of software(which includes the operating system) does not hinder the service terms.

Dell offers only “Hardware” warranty which does not bind the customer to any particular OS. The laptop (L501x in my case) usually comes with some OS pre-installed with it and is recommended by Dell to the particular set of hardware. The Dell tech-support only provides OS/Software assistance (like installations/drivers/etc) for the recommended or shipped OS, whatever maybe the case.

If the customer decides to install another OS (say Linux), the support they will be able to provide in terms of the OS itself or the drivers or any other related issue would be very limited.

The “very limited” support was clear when I the tech support guy a question about the Nvidia drivers. He just pointed me towards the Nvidia’s website and the download section and thats it. He made it very clear that drivers “may or may not work” on Ubuntu and Dell wont be able to help me with the problems that arise because it.

Bottom Line: Installing additional OS or any other software does not void your hardware warranty (or complete cover)

So go ahead … and enjoy Ubuntu without any headaches about warranty :)

Welcome!

Hey There! Thanks for taking time to go through this post

What’s this blog about?

Its all about getting Ubuntu to work perfectly on Dell’s New Laptop - XPS15 (L501X). Since most of the hardware in XPS 14,15,17 are the same; most of the guides apply to all of them.

Who has written these guides?

This blog is just a collection of guides. Since I personally own a XPS-15 and run Ubuntu on it; I keep looking for better guides to make all of the hardware to work in sync. I have found a lot of helpful content on ubuntuforums.org and I am trying to compile them together in the best possible way!

What Hardware are you testing these on?

I have a Dell XPS L501X

  • Intel Core i5-460M Processor (2.53GHz, 2Core/4Threads, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 3M cache)
  • 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M GPU
  • 6GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
  • 9 Cell Primary Battery
  • Intel WiFi Link 6200 (802.11a/g/n) Mini-card
  • Running Ubuntu 10.10 x64 with Windows 7 x64 dual boot

So I hope these guides/tips help other fellow XPS users to rock Ubuntu on! Enjoy :)
